Silver Purity Explained: 999, 925, 900 and What Your Silver Is Worth

That tiny number stamped on silver — 999, 925, 800 — tells you its purity, and purity decides its value. Here's how to read it.

Fineness in parts per thousand

Silver fineness is measured in parts per thousand. 999 is fine (pure) silver, 925 is sterling (92.5%), 900 and 800 are common in older coins and cutlery. The higher the number, the more pure silver per gram.

How silver is priced

Like gold, silver is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce, then divided by 31.1035 for a per-gram price. A 925 gram is worth 92.5% of the pure per-gram price, and so on down the scale.

Sterling vs fine silver

Fine silver (999) is soft and used for bars and coins; sterling (925) is harder and standard for jewellery and cutlery. When comparing prices, always match fineness — a 925 piece shouldn't be priced like pure silver.
